Game 1 Gold – VS – White
4-4 Goalie battle, no really, it was a goalies game. It looked like it was White’s night. Jeff Zyrek played one of his best games of the season. White played like one of the Edmonton teams from the eighties. You know the drill, one defensive man Barry (Coffee) Dubetz back, to help out Jeff (Fuhr) Zyrek. Gold had more chances to steal this game than any team playing the 2008 Lions.
First Period
(5:58) Kevin Gualdoni took the zone pressed through the D but Zyrek had the net covered. Taking the puck around the back of the net gave Rob Comiskey time to get open in front, the pass got through and Comiskey slid it past Zyrek. 1 – 0 Gold. (4:09) White retaliates with a break out pass from Bob Jackovich to Jeff Kuehn, Kuehn carried the puck up the ice into the zone, drawing Bill (TBAPGITL) Iannello far to his left, Keith Omand was open to the right and had nothing but net. 1 – 1 tie. White stayed on the attack and at (2:44) it paid off causing Gold to take the first penalty of the game. The power play was working and Gold was in trouble. (2:30) a scrum in front of (TBAPGITL) Iannello making several saves Rob Stempien’s shot blocked, Keith Omand ‘s rebound blocked, the puck was just out of reach of Gold’s D, when Barry Dubetz came in from the point picking up the second rebound and flipped a butterfly past the outstretched (TBAPGITL) Iannello. Power play goal 2 – 1 White on to the second
Second Period
Gold had chance after chance but Zyrek was there. One play Rob Solnik put Greg Pozzo and Ron Maceachern up the ice. Pozzo broke into the zone with Maceachern following, Zyrek not only took away the shot but was out of the far enough to take away the pass too. Pozzo coming out of the corner taking the shot. It grazed the post, went through the crease then Zyrek put it to the corner. Later Rob Stempien got a break away on (TBAPGITL) Iannello, Iannello was there and made the save. (3:37) Tom Brown dug the puck from the corner passed to Comiskey in front, Zyrek was there stopping the shot but so was Gualdoni for the rebound. 2 -2 all tied up. Gold kept the pressure on taking their second lead of the game (2:14) Pozzo and Maceachern leaving the zone with Solnik following Pozzo to Maceachern, Zyrek played the shot –pass back to Pozzo when Maceachern seeing the late man Rob Solnik who buried it. 3 – 2 Gold. Gold pushing the play drew a penalty and a power play opportunity that went into period three.
Third Period
Gold started out on the power play but couldn’t put anything together. It was back and forth ping pong hockey. White played like the only thing that mattered was the win when at (6:09) Omand stealing breakout pass at center ice with the D split Omand let it rip, (TBAPGITL) Iannello got a big piece of it but not enough. 3 – 3 tie. (1:23) Stempien gets another shot at (TBAPGITL) Iannello this time it Stempien’s turn 4 – 3 White. Pozzo dangling the puck in a 2 by 2 foot area just inside the blue and as he’s breaking free White gets called for the hook giving Gold a final opportunity. Gold pulls the goalie for the extra attacker six on four hockey and at (0:25) Grazioli stopping the clearing attempt, reading the D the captain’s pass to Maceachern was tape to tape, Maceachern drew White to the left, leaving Pozzo a line to the net Maceachern made the pass, Zyrek was beat clean. 4 – 4 kiss your sister good night.
