Game 1: RED vs BLACK (ever heard of a seesaw?)
After last week’s loss to Green, Black came out in the 1st with one of their best defensive shows of the season. Red was all over the offensive zone, but couldn’t get to the net, and what did get through, Herr made look easy. It looked like Red was in complete control, but Black’s D remained strong. Then a break out and Marty Schmitt took full advantage, feeding Dan Murphy who put the puck past the Chief. 1 - 0 Black. Red still looked in control and late in period it looked like Terry Lampman was going to breakaway, but he lost his footing when Bob Smith reached in with perfectly played “poke check”. The first ended with Black up by 1.
2nd period. It looked like Black was going to take control of the game: Dan Baljet to Mark Slater, Slater to Emperor Fujita, and Black was up 2 zip. Then, all of a sudden, everything seemed to change. Lampman got it started with a pass from Mike Foley and Dale Pioch, putting the puck past Herr. 2 minutes later it was Mitch McCann and Tim Foley with a perfectly executed 2 on 1, Mitch to Tim, Tim to Mitch, back to Tim for the shot, nope, back to Mitch and Red had it tied up at 2. Red was on roll. Tod Gazetti started the third goal out with a breakout pass to Mike Foley, Foley got it to Lampman and Terry lit the light giving Red their first lead of the night. The 2nd ended 3 - 2 with Red getting 3 unanswered goals.
3rd Period. It looked like Red was going to hold on until John Prisciandaro passed to Baljet, who got the puck to Schmitt. The puck was behind the Chief and it was all tied up at 3. With 3:30 left on the clock, the wheels came off the Big Red Machine, when Mark Slater and Kenji Fujita got the lead back for Black with Fujita’s second of the night Then it was Dan (The Jet) Baljet who took the puck up the right side pushed through the D. This one would make the highlight reel if we had one, putting Black up 5 - 3 and that was it. Chalk up 2 more points for Black. President’s Trophy?
